There are two ways to get out of this rather sticky situation. It's scripted so that it should open as You approach and press on to it (it's auto-triggered), so You're not missing anything and You're doing what You're supposed to. This game didn't have that many bugs, but the ones it did have were (and are, to this day) fairly annoying. I'm fairly sure You'll have to find and load an earlier save. I prefer to play the boxed version anyway - STEAM takes too frickin' long to load levels, which load in about 0.3s on Standalone.) If this occurs in STEAM, the workaround MIGHT still work, but I do remember STEAM using some sort of different versions of the game (different from retail updates, looking older etc.) so if it doesn't - I cannot help, don't pressure me.
